About Rio Hardy
Cornhole Cup

David WilliamsThe annual Rio Hardy Cornhole Cup was founded by David Williams and had its inaugural run on Memorial Day weekend in 2011. It was so popular that it was moved to Labor Day weekend and has been there ever since. The event takes place at Jesse’s Cantina in Campo Mosqueda on the Sunday before Memorial Day. Starting in 2025, we’ve added a pre-party where we get together on Friday or Saturday night to pick the teams for the Advanced blind draw.

Profits from the Cornhole Cup go to the “River Fund.” The River Fund is administered by Bill Wiemeyer and is funded by both the Poker Run on Memorial Day weekend and the Rio Hardy Cornhole Cup on Labor Day weekend. Although money from the River Fund is occasionally used for maintenance projects that benefit the entire river community (water testing, removing dangerous river debris, etc.), the majority of the money is donated to local charities on an annual basis. Schools, orphanages, fire departments, medical clinics and other Mexicali organizations have benefited from River Fund donations over the years. In fact, there is usually an outing in October of each year where a group of Rio Hardy residents travel to these organizations to award the funds. Contact Bill Wiemeyer if you’re interested in getting involved.

The annual Rio Hardy Poker Run was founded by Bill Wiemeyer and had its inaugural run on Memorial Day weekend in 2008. The Poker Run takes place with five stops along the Rio Hardy river with the closing ceremonies at Jesse’s Cantina in Campo Mosqueda. The Poker Run usually has a theme and most of the participants will do their best to dress up themselves and their boats to show their Poker Run spirit. Each host stop usually features a take on the theme as well, not to mention food, drink and plenty of entertainment. Each participant will pick a playing card at each stop and present their eventual poker hand at the closing ceremony to see if they have won any prizes.

Bill Wiemeyer has since handed off the main Poker Run planning and management duties, but is still heavily involved in the event. The current Poker Run managers are Paige Williams and Kaley Duff. This event runs on volunteers and the creativity of the community, so please contact Paige or Kaley if you want to volunteer, host a stop, have some great ideas for how to make it better or if you just want to say thanks!
